BATANES THE MOVIE

There’s nothing like a great love story to move us. Love may slip through your fingers but life goes on. There’s always a better promise of things to come. Love may be lovelier the second time around.

In Ignite Media and GMA Films’ “BATANES,” love is at the center of this moving and powerful film- a heartwarming study of a relationship between two cultures. Hence the tagline, “Love knows no borders.”

Directors Adolfo Alix, Jr. (Donsol, Kadin, Tambolista) and Dave Hukomdescribe the film as a poignant love story about two people who may or may not end up together. “Though they are from different cultures, they’ll prove that love is very universal. Emotions know no boundaries,” the directors share.

With its vast landscapes, rough seas and ever-changing weather, Batanes is the perfect backdrop to this groundbreaking movie. Itself being an interesting character, Batanes may represent the gamut of emotions the characters feel when they fall for each other. Sweeping yet bittersweet.

Taiwanese superstar Ken Chu (Meteor Garden, Tokyo Trial) stars in his first Filipino film with Iza Calzado (Moments of Love, The Echo) in this romance drama.

The film also boasts of a powerhouse ensemble cast- newcomer Joem Bascon, Sid Lucero, Coco Martin, Mike Tan and Glaiza de Castro with acting heavyweights Bembol Roco, Daria Ramirez and Julio Diaz.

On board are line producer Arleen Cuevas, cinematographer Ramoncito Redoble , editor Miren Alvarez-Fabregas, sound recordist Mark Locsin, sound engineer Ditoy Aguila, production designer Cyrus Khan and music composer Jesse Lucas.

“BATANES” is sponsored by Asian Spirit, Fuji Film and Senco Link Technologies.

The movie opens on December 5 in theaters nationwide.

all hype..i like the actors and actresses but to be honest…its disappointing…it was dragging… but to respect the movie and artists i still finished the film until the last credits rolled.. couldve been better…sayang lang kasi….

That’s right. I waited for so long to get the best of the film, but sad to say , Ken and Iza’s presence were wasted. It looks like the audience is cheated by the beauty of the place and the presence of the stars. Tama. Sayang na sayang. I thought probably that the producers paid Ken so much that the movie was sacrificed. Mukhang minadali.

I beg to disagree! It is one of the most beautiful Filipino films I have ever seen. It isn’t over-acted, no unnecessary conflicts, just simple, reality based, wonderful story. It digs deep into one’s feelings and makes the viewer journey with Pam’s ((za’s character) experiences of falling in love, grieving and resolution. I believe, people expected a pop and glamorous portrayal from the two big stars which is why they were disappointed. Well, they won’t see that here! If you are looking for a deep, heartfel and visually beautiful and moving movie – then you have gotten the jackpot. But if you are looking for commercial fluff – don’t watch this. Stick with the other common Pinoy flicks.

i am native of Batanes. i have not watched the movie (maybe later). i am extremely wary of celebrities making commercial money out of the only one pure, and sacred thing of my life – my homeland.

but i am keeping an open mind as far as the movie is concerned…sort of a wary, but curious viewer.

Story wise Its acceptable to the Filipino taste and you add Ken Chu and Iza Calzado how can anything go wrong, right? well I hope they just change the title to “Pag Ngiti ng Dagat” then have a press release that It was shot in Batanes, at least there’s an understanding that its a love story shot in Batanes. I was expecting to see BATANES but I saw lots of sea water, night scene & indoor scene, which you also can see if you watched Marina, Marimar or Dyesebel.

I was really disappointed that I did not see a Flickr/Pbase kind of Batanes, the photographer’s haven. I was really looking forward to see why my friends would say its a paradise. Maybe I was expecting too much but at least the movie should have highlight what makes Batanes Unique in its own way.

If it wasn’t for Ken Chu & Iza Calzado I will not finish the movie (btw I was 10 minutes late I did not watch the first part of the film) Or let me say I was full of hope that maybe up to the end credits it will be like something that promotes Batanes.

But stll it does a great job of making us aware of Batanes. I hope to see Batanes for myself someday… or get a life =)

I read some people say na pangit ang story, but I don’t believe them. It looks like a good movie to me, and it looks like it’s something na simple and endearing.

it’s an independent arsty film, so it is not really for mass consumption. i am speaking generally of course since i haven’t seen the film but i am looking forward to seeing it.

but what gets me though is when some people ask why the title is Batanes and the movie has got nothing to do with it? the thing about indie films is everything is symbolic. it is batanes because despite its stormy weather and unpredictable nature, Batanes is and remains to be a beautiful, mysterious place that everyone is drawn to, and despite of whatever happens, you’d still want to go there and won’t regret being there…which is a whole metaphor for love and this movie is a love story.

i saw the trailer, it seems like a good movie. i’ll find out when i get a copy of the film.

I just saw the movie a few hours ago and I was so disappointed. I will have to agree to the previous comments that it was a SAYANG. 1- SAYANG ang bayad kay Ken Chu. Why does he have to get his name as the first for the credits? Ano un, kasama sa kontrata ng promotion nya?! Iza did most of the parts… (don’t get me wrong…am not an Iza fan…) 2-I really did appreciate the story revolving around the sea…since ang setting naman ay sa Batanes, tama lang na umikot sa karakter ng dagat, pero kulang pa rin… o baka hindi pa nga tapos ans script at minadali nga kc??!! 3-Sayang ung ibang cast.Walang masyadong build-up sa kanila as supporting cast.Powerhouse p nga. Walng kuwenta. …well, wala bang remake ng movie?! Give justice to the setting and the cast naman..

  • Dee wrote on 26 December, 2007, 13:53

I watched the movie and i have seen the trailers. What I saw is that the makers of the movie were selling the movie. Not Ken. Otherwise, it should have been titled “Ken”. Siguro kaya nabitin yung iba kasi they were expecting to see ken the whole time. The story was good. Its not the typical pinoy movie with sampalan scenes and lines that are overly dramatic. Yun nga lang, parang sobrang kulang nga nung lines. Di naman sa minadali. Its more like…….Nasobrahan sa acting?? Buti nalang sobrang galing ni Iza! The story was good, cinematography was good, scriptwas “ok lang”, actors were great (kahit di masyado nakita yung iba), The place was amazing! And by the way, they entitled and used Batanes, not to exploit and make money out of it, but also to introduce it as a wonderful place in the country.
