Cebuano music has finally got a new voice, courtesy of VisPop!
The very 1st Visayan Pop Music Festival or VisPop was successfully held at Benedicto College Artists Hall last May 18, 2013.
Many particpants submitted their entries. A total of 80 entries were received on December of 2012 and out of the many entries, only 6 were given the chance to grab the top spot of the podium.
The victors of the night are Jewel & Joe Edward Villaflores with their “Duyog” entry. They even garnered the People’s Choice Award by MOR and Best Interpreter Award.
Lourdes Maglinte came in second with her masterpiece “Laylay.” Her entry also won the Bisayaa Uy Special Award for having the best lyrics, the award of which was chosen by Artist Ko.
The captivating song written by Marianne Dungog and Kyle Wong won the 3rd spot with their entry “Balay Ni Mayang.”
A fighter and fierce performance of Alphecca Perpetua’s entry “Historias” earned the Pinaka Fighter Award by Fighter Wine.
The VisPop organizers only invited the best to fill up the panel of judges, in the name of Anna Fegi (multi-awarded Cebuana singer), Nelia Navarro (DTI Director), and Gary Granada (one of the country’s most noted singer and songwriter).
By fetching the tagline “Bisayaa Uy!”, the inception of VisPop was geared towards uplifting the status of Cebuano music industry, especially improving the songs that are played on local radio stations. However, VisPop is not just any other contest being organized because it is also a songwriting competition.
The success of the 1st VisPop could be attributed to Artist Ko or Artists & Musicians Marketing Cooperative, which is composed of Insoy Ninal, Ian Zafra, Jude Gitamondoc, and Cattski Espina, in collaboration with FILSCAP or Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
