Almost 57,000 grades 5 and 6 students in public elementary schoolsare now learning using mobile technology, thanks to a program called Text2Teach,whichaims to alleviate educational problems in the country.

This update was announced by Nikka Abes, Corporate Communications Manager, Nokia Philippines, who also explained that Text2Teachexplores the usage of mobile phones as teaching tools for elementary students.“We wanted to create a more interactive learning environment for students. By using Nokia’s Education Deliverytechnology (NED) we could provide schools with effective visual aids on Grade 5 and 6 Math, Science and English subjects through 3G-enabled devices,”

The program is the local version of the global BridgeIT educational program. It is spearheaded in the Philippines by Nokia in partnership with Ayala Foundation, Inc., Globe Telecom, the Department of Education, SEAMEO INNOTECH, and Pearson Foundation.

Nearly in completion of its third phase,Text2Teach has helped improve the academic performance, classroom behavior and participation of students in the recipient schools. The parents, school officials and community leaders have also shown positive attitudes toward using mobile technology in teaching. This was based on a consultant monitoring conducted from August to December 2011.

Text2Teach Phase 3 has reached 157 schools in 2011 alone, and an additional 15 schools in 2012, makinga cumulative total of 557 schools covered. It has also trained more than 1,600 teachers on the use of the NEDtechnology in the classroom.

Text2Teach Phase 3 reached 9 provinces in Regions 1, 2, 3, 5 and CAR. Among the cities and municipalities reached were:Vigan and Candon Cities in Ilocos Sur; Santiago City and the Municipality of Ilagan in Isabela; Tuguegarao City in Cagayan; the Municipality of La Trinidad in Benguet; Dagupan and Urdaneta Cities, and the Municipalities of Villasis, Asingan, and Sta. Chile’s BridgeIT Program Manager also came to visit for some learning sessions and to visit Text2Teach schools. The project has also been invited by UNESCO to participate in the 2012 Webinar organized by the International Institute for Educational Planning, Regional Headquarters Buenos Aires (IIEP-UNESCO) and FLACSO Argentina, to share about BridgeIT/Text2Teach, and dialogue with different initiatives around the world on the integration of ICT in Education.

Meanwhile,Text2Teach Phase 4was launched on June 28, 2011 with an objective to develop new curriculum-based content, reach far-flung areas, enhance teacher training, and upgrade existing programs. “The fourth phase of Text2Teachhopes to bring the project to a level where it can be mainstreamed into the regular programs of the Philippine Department of Education,” addedMario Deriquito, Senior Director of Ayala Foundation’s Education and Leadership Division.

Since 2003, the number of student and teacher beneficiaries has multiplied over the years of implementing Text2Teach. The completion of Text2Teach Phase 4 will have reached and covered Regions II, III, IV-A, IV-B and CAR in Luzon, regions VI and VIII in Visayas and regions IX and XII in Mindanao.

Cebu Blogosphere and the Best Cebu Blogs

Best Cebu Blogs 2011 logo 300x180 Cebu Blogosphere and the Best Cebu BlogsIf we are to provide a measuring stick of knowing how the Cebu Blogosphere had grown these past years, one would be tracking the developments of Best Cebu Blogs.

Their vision:

“Best Cebu Blogs Awards aims to recognize the existence and relevance of blogging in Cebu’s local blogging scene by pooling the finest online publishers in the Queen City of the South. It also aspires to augment Cebu bloggers’ influence in the general cyber community worldwide.”

For most, it was a time of the year in Cebu where everyone gathers and see who had excelled in the field based on the criteria set by the organizers and judges.

On a personal note, Best Cebu Blogs says more than what it is presenting every year. It not only emphasizes the importance of quality online publishing but also the value of continuous growth.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010, it was basically the selection of top 10 best blogs in the Cebu blogosphere as adjudged by the popular vote and a panel of qualified judges.

PinoyWorld is proud to say that it was selected as one of the Best Cebu Blog Awardee of 2009. In 2010, we came in as sponsor. RLCOMM International, the mother company, supports BCB’s visions.

This year, BCB has grown in terms of quality blogs in different niches. Forty one bloggers (41)  are vying for seven titles:

  • Top 10 Famous Blogs Facebook Contest
  • Best Cebu Food Blog
  • Best Cebu Personal Blog
  • Best Cebu Photo Blog
  • Best Cebu Travel Blog
  • Best Cebu Technology Blog, and
  • Best Cebu Fashion Blog

Not only has the number of qualified blogger/participants, and their niches had grown. The progress can also be seen in the number of industries supporting it. The 4th Annual Best Cebu Blogs Awards is made possible by Nokia PhilippinesMaribago Bluewater Beach ResortSM City CebuTimex PhilippinesGT Cosmetics ManufacturingGT & MeGlobe TelecomWacky Tots PhotoBoothOrange Brutus,  Cebu Bloggers Society Inc.Empress Of DracBjorn CebuanoFace CebuPulso.PH, and Old’s Cool Online.

Seeing BCB’s growth in the past years makes me smile and proud. BCB does not only promote quality and progressive online publishing, it also indirectly strenghtens and supports my personal vision for a unified, strong, dynamic and responsible social media community for Cebu.

My sincerest Congratulations to its Founder Mark Monta (http://facecebu.net), Co-Organizer Agnes Jimenez (http://www.empressofdrac.com/), Co-organizer Bjornson Bernales (http://www.bjorncebuano.com/) and the rest of the BCB 2011 Team!
